DoveVale B & B is one of only a small number of Bed and Breakfast establishments close to the above places.  We offer 4 star quality and all our rooms are ensuite and have Free View TV and broadband Internet connection. We have ample off-road parking.

OUR PRICES are from £25-£39 per person per night. More specifically:

  • bed & breakfast rooms for single occupancy cost £35 for two or more nights (£39 per night for one night).
  • bed & breakfast rooms for double/twin occupancy are: £50 per night for more than two nights; £55 (two nights); and £60 (one night).

WHY USE A B&B WHEN YOU ARE THINKING OF A HOTEL?

Most important is price. We obtained prices from 7 local hotels, viz:

  • Dog and Partridge, Tutbury (or, Ye Olde Dog and Partridge)
  • Blenheim House Hotel, Etwall
  • Dovecliff Hall Hotel, Rolleston
  • Hilton House Hotel, Hilton
  • Brookhouse Hotel, Rolleston
  • Three Queens Hotel, Burton on Trent
  • Boars Head, Sudbury.

In no particular order, the bed and breakfast price per night for one person staying for two nights was £85, £85, £76.50, £67, £69.95, £89 - £155, £108.  This represents two to more than three times our price of £35 per night. THUS, OUR B&B IS MUCH CHEAPER THAN A HOTEL.

So what about other differences? Our experience and the comments below are based on staying at hotels away from this area and they may or may not apply to the seven hotels listed above.

Hotels are posher (probably) and hotel rooms are probably larger than ours but the rooms at DoveVale are certainly adequate, especially for one person. They are clean and the beds are comfortable (if this wasn’t so we wouldn’t have been given a four star rating). We would suggest that a B&B is more homely and (because everything is done by the owners) we are on top of our guests needs and are able to respond to them personally.

On ratings. Hotel and B&B ratings do not seem to be interchangeable. We would suggest that a three star hotel is probably equivalent to a four star B&B for items that are comparable. There is also a definition problem. Some unaccredited establishments that would be rated as B&Bs under quality schemes wrongly call themselves hotels.

Reception. We do not have a continuously manned reception so we will ask about such as arrival times to ensure we are available when you check-in. On the other hand, it is rare that we cannot be contacted either at home or by phone if there is anything you want during your stay. Hotels typically give you your room key and point you in the right direction. We always accompany you to your room and explain its features.

Broadband/Internet. Most hotels now seem to have Wi-fi. We have direct cable connection to the Internet in each room. There is a desk or table in each room if you want to work. Note: many hotels charge for Wi-fi and Internet use, our service is free.

Cooked Breakfast. Well, if you order a cooked breakfast, some hotels just plonk a plate in front of you, but we would expect to see a buffet. That’s OK, you can make a choice, but if it has been on display for a while the tomatoes may look a little shrivelled, the beans are starting to skin over and the sausages may look unappetising. A little unfair perhaps, but don’t you find it maddening when you get to the fried eggs and they’ve either been on the hot plate for ages and feel leathery or the person before you takes the last one and you have to wait? At DoveVale we cook a breakfast freshly to your order, with seven items being available. In addition we offer three fish dishes; many hotels will not match that.

Continental breakfast. We offer cereal, toast, preserves, grapefruit segments and fruit salad. In a posh hotel we would expect to see a range of cold meats, cheese, croissants etc. We do not put these out but if you ask when you arrive (or on the first morning of a multi-night stay) we can try to meet your requirements.

Vegetarian. We offer tomatoes, mushrooms and baked beans plus eggs – all cooked separately from meat products. With our daughter being a vegetarian we usually have vegetarian sausages available but it would be wise to warn us when you book in if you would like these.

Television. There is a TV in each room but it is not flat screen. A full range of Freeview channels is available, however. In our experience the range in hotels is frequently limited and there is a concentration on using the television to advertise hotel services (no, we don’t offer paid-for films!) which acts against being able to easily find the TV channel we want.

Lunch and Evening meals. You won’t find these at DoveVale but there are many options for eating nearby (including all of the hotels listed above). A pub meal menu is available three minutes walk away and if you extend the walk to 10 minutes there are several eating possibilities in Tutbury. If you don’t want to go out there is an excellent fish and chip shop in the village and a well stocked Co-op supermarket close by can be trawled for food.

Room Service/Eating In. No we don’t offer room service but there are several food delivery companies locally that (in effect) do. A range of menus for food delivery is available at our reception. Our dining room is available for eating at all times and we provide crockery and cutlery. The dining room also has a TV so you don’t have to miss your favourite programme.

(See our web site page Eating In/Eating Out.)

Coffee and gift shops. No. There is coffee, tea etc in the rooms (and some say we are more generous here than most hotels). For coffee and gift shops we suggest a short trip into Tutbury which seems to be stuffed full of them.
